Yes, government is corruptable and can become an inefficient mess of red tape and constraintive regulation. But the solution, it seems to me, is to FIX government in these cases, not get rid of it alltogether: That's throwing the baby out with the bathwater!
When conservatives and libertarians tell me that the economy would be better off with less government regulation, it just makes me want to slap them in the face and ask them "What the HELL do you think CAUSED the 2008 economic collapse?? BIG BIRD?!
Again, if there's something wrong with government regulation, the solution isn't to give the crooks and mobsters who are corrupting the government a carte blanche to do whatever the fuck they want.

Nope. The Community Reinvestment Act. That and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And the Federal Reserve's reckless monetary policy, which was spurred on by the repeal of the gold standard. And over a century of Keynesian economics on steroids.
But I guess the simple answer would be government.
